You haven’t had gumbo until you’ve had Commander’s Palace’s gumbo. That’s why we decided to share their amazing recipe with you, so you can at least pretend to know what you’re doing.
6tbspflour
½cupshortening or vegetable oil
6cloves garlic(chopped)
1white or yellow onion(diced)
1green bell pepper(chopped)
1bunch celery(chopped)
2lbspeeled raw shrimp
18 oz can of tomato sauce
3qtswater
1lblump crab meat
¼bunch chopped parsley
½tspthyme
3bay leaves
18oz package of frozen okra
½ptoysters with juice
salt and pepper
Crystal Hot Sauce to taste

Make a roux: Combine flour and shortening or oil in a large pot on medium to high heat. Cook, stirring frequently, until flour is deeply browned, but not burned. Compare to color of Hershey's chocolate bar.

Add garlic and cook until golden brown.

Add onion, bell pepper, and celery and cook until transparent.

Add shrimp and tomato sauce, simmer 10 minutes, stir in water, and mix well.

Add all other ingredients except okra and oysters, and cook for about an hour.
