Commander’s Palace Seafood Gumbo
You haven’t had gumbo until you’ve had Commander’s Palace’s gumbo. That’s why we decided to share their amazing recipe with you, so you can at least pretend to know what you’re doing.
6 tbsp flour
½ cup shortening or vegetable oil
6 cloves garlic(chopped)
1 white or yellow onion(diced)
1 green bell pepper(chopped)
1 bunch celery(chopped)
2 lbs peeled raw shrimp
1 8 oz can of tomato sauce
3 qts water
1 lb lump crab meat
¼ bunch chopped parsley
½ tsp thyme
3 bay leaves
1 8oz package of frozen okra
½ pt oysters with juice
salt and pepper
Crystal Hot Sauce to taste
Directions

Make a roux: Combine flour and shortening or oil in a large pot on medium to high heat. Cook, stirring frequently, until flour is deeply browned, but not burned. Compare to color of Hershey's chocolate bar.

Add garlic and cook until golden brown.

Add onion, bell pepper, and celery and cook until transparent.

Add shrimp and tomato sauce, simmer 10 minutes, stir in water, and mix well.

Add all other ingredients except okra and oysters, and cook for about an hour.

Add okra, and cook 20 minutes.

Add oysters and cook 10 minutes longer.

Serve in a soup bowl over steamed rice.

Add Crystal Hot Sauce to taste
